As the days passed and our trip to the cabin at Ein Karem approached, I increasingly felt how badly I needed this vacation. He made me so enthused for our getaway, as if something big was about to await us there. Whenever Aiden thought I was nervous or tired, he would count the days until our vacation. “Hold on tight,” he would say and mark with his fingers, “three more days.”

On the morning of our trip, as I was packing, he was making sure I had packed enough books for us.

“I don’t want us watching TV there,” he announced.

“I also hate when the TV keeps us apart” I agreed.

“Right,” he said, “if we watch TV, we’ll forget spending time together. I actually think we should stop watching TV at home on Saturdays.”

I froze, “Why?” I asked.

“Just because, so that we spend time together as a family,” he said and went on with an accusing tone, “so that once a week the boys won’t stare at the TV,” as if it was me who made them stare at it on Saturdays.

“We can choose any other day as TV-free. Why Saturday?” I asked sheepishly. I was annoyed that he had brought the subject up, as if it were something casual, also under the pretense of spending more time with the kids. He wasn’t willing to admit, perhaps not even to himself, that he was trying to make us all religious.

“Why are you being coy?” he said impatiently, “We’re Jewish. So, if we decide to have a TV-free day, it had better be Saturday.” I sighed. I was too tired to have this argument just seconds before we went on our trip. We had all weekend to talk about it, he was also getting on my nerves, just hanging around while I was busy packing. If I don’t concentrate, I might forget packing something important. Last time I forgot packing our toothbrushes, he didn’t help me in feeling any less guilty, “How could you forget toothbrushes?” he accused me back then, “That’s quintessential packing. That and underwear.”

“Maybe you should let me keep on packing quietly,” I asked. “I’ll forget to pack something important.”

“What’s there to pack,” he said, “we’re going for two days, not a week. And don’t take hours with that, I don’t want us to get stuck in traffic.”

I sighed in disapproval so that he’ll take the hint and leave our bedroom.
